I embraced the digital nomad lifestyle and changed my base to Southeast Asia, drawn by the magic of geoarbitrage—earning in a strong currency while living luxuriously for less. But more than that, I was drawn to the vibrant energy, cultural richness, and adventurous spirit of this part of the world.

I’ve explored both Vietnam and Thailand, and each captivated me in its own unique way. Both offer a beautiful blend of culture, community, and opportunity. As I navigated my digital nomad journey, I found myself drawn to different aspects of each country—one offering simplicity and entrepreneurial energy, the other providing comfort, structure, and modern ease.

Cost of Living

Both countries are incredibly affordable, but Vietnam comes out ahead if you’re budget-conscious. Rent, food, and transportation tend to be cheaper in Vietnam. A delicious street food meal can cost just a couple of dollars, and modern apartments in cities like Da Nang or Hanoi are surprisingly affordable. Thailand, while also very budget-friendly, offers a wider range of upscale options—from chic full-service condos to modern malls and international dining, including Michelin-starred restaurants that elevate everyday living.

Visas and Immigration

Thailand offers more structured and accessible long-term visa options, especially for retirees, digital nomads, and those willing to invest in their stay. The Elite Visa, Education Visa, and Retirement Visa make it easier to stay for years. Vietnam has made great improvements with its 90-day e-visa, and long-term stays are possible through business sponsorships or residence cards—but it’s still a bit more bureaucratic.

Work and Income

Vietnam is a fantastic place for entrepreneurs, teachers, and remote workers looking to build something new. The startup scene is growing, and it’s easier to set up small businesses. Thailand has a more established job market, especially in tourism, hospitality, and corporate sectors. If you’re looking to teach English, both are excellent, but if you’re seeking structured corporate opportunities, Thailand has the edge.

Quality of Life

Thailand tends to offer a smoother, more comfortable lifestyle, especially in places like Bangkok and Chiang Mai. Public transportation is more developed, there’s easy access to Western conveniences, and the healthcare system is world-class. Vietnam feels more raw and adventurous. Cities like Ho Chi Minh buzz with energy, while places like Da Nang and Hoi An offer a slower, more grounded lifestyle. It’s a beautiful choice for those who crave authenticity and simplicity.

Culture and Lifestyle

Vietnam is rooted in Confucian values—tradition, respect for hierarchy, and family are central. The culture is warm but a bit more reserved. Thailand has a more relaxed, “no worries” vibe. People are generally very open and accustomed to foreigners. The culture here embraces joy, balance, and friendliness. If you want to be immersed in traditional daily life, Vietnam is for you. If you want something that feels more accessible and socially easy, Thailand is likely a better fit.

Language and Communication

Both Vietnamese and Thai are tonal and challenging to learn, but in Thailand, English is more widely spoken—especially in tourist areas and expat communities. In contrast, Thailand has excellent infrastructure, especially in Bangkok with its skytrain and subway systems. Getting around is easier, safer, and more comfortable in Thailand—ideal for those who value convenience.

Healthcare

Thailand’s healthcare system is exceptional. With modern hospitals, English-speaking doctors, and affordable private care, it’s a top destination for medical tourism. Vietnam is more affordable overall, and major cities have good international hospitals—but the overall quality and consistency of care isn’t quite as high.

Safety

Both countries are safe overall. In Vietnam, the biggest risks are traffic accidents and petty theft, especially in crowded areas. In Thailand, scams are more common, particularly in tourist zones, but violent crime is rare. With some basic awareness and street smarts, you’ll feel secure in either place.

Digital Nomad Friendliness

Thailand has long been a hub for digital nomads. Chiang Mai, in particular, is world-famous for its coworking spaces, community, and internet reliability. Bangkok also offers excellent infrastructure and vibrant city life. Vietnam is catching up fast. Cities like Da Nang and Ho Chi Minh are attracting more remote workers with their affordability and charm. Internet is fast and cheap, and the coffee culture is unbeatable.
